‘Tonight We Die As Men’

The above book is a new and welcome publication from Ian Gardner and Roger J. Day – about the 3rd Battalion of the 506th in the Normandy Campaign.
This is a fantastic piece of research, and also benefits from having the added perspective of some of the local French inhabitants and gives a good balance. The 3rd Battalion of the 506th (G H & I Companies) seem to have missed out on coverage of their valuable contribution to the Normandy campaign until now. ‘Band of Brothers’ by Stephen Ambrose covered the story of Easy Company one of the 2nd battalion 506th companies and other books by both George Koskiamaki and Donald Burgett looked at exploits of the 1st Battalion 506th units, mainly A Company.

There is a good selection of supporting photographs and maps and the story provides a detailed chronology of events as they were experienced by the men who were actually there. There is also a supporting DVD ‘The Forgotten Battalion’ with wonderfully filmed interviews with veterans of the 3/506th who contributed to the book. If you enjoyed Band of Brothers then both the book and DVD are a must. I found I could not put this book down and read my copy on holiday in 3 days……..
Well done to all those involved with both book and DVD -
I strongly recommend both the book and the accompanying DVD as a MUST.
