The street my Grandparents lived on during the war and where my Grandad was born was Carr Street. It was demolished in the 1970′s as part of the development of the Brunel Centre. Today the Murray John building covers the site. The street sign still remains near to where Carr Street was. My Grandfather was the last remining resident who refused to move and only moved out just before the demolition teams started to move in. This was a sad day and I much prefer my memories of Carr Street backing on to the old canal path than this tower block!

This is the Milton Road bridge over the path of the old canal, long since drained. Near to the ‘Majestic’ roller – rink the arch under the bridge provided a little privacy for a ‘Good-night Kiss’ for the local girls and their sweethearts.

This is one of the popular Swindon wartime pubs with American soldiers in Old Town, the Clifton Hotel.

Bob Lundy D/506 remembers visiting this pub.

The local Arkells, Swindon Brewery’s Mild & Bitter beer and Darts were a part of the attraction.
